Benefits of Turmeric
Most people recognize turmeric from its bright orange color or have tasted it in Indian food. But turmeric is so much more than a spice for food. The western world is catching on to the health benefits that this wonderful plant medicine has been used for, for centuries.
PROPERTIES
Turmeric is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory. Studies have shown that it is stronger than hydrocortisone, minus the harmful side effects. Those suffering from arthritis or many of the other inflammatory conditions benefit from regularly consuming turmeric.
Turmeric is also an antioxidant. It increases cellular resistance to oxidative damage and increases glutathione levels to support the liver in its detox processes. It has shown to help with digestion of fats and prevent yeast overgrowth in the gut.
Studies have shown that curcumin in turmeric has proven to kill cancer cells and inhibit growth of cancer cells. One of turmeric’s main constituents, curcumin, has proven to be powerful in the treatment of many types of cancers including:
esophageal
lymphoma
breast
skin
prostate
Curcumin’s benefits can be enhanced when combined with black peppercorn, which is also an anti-inflammatory. I use a tincture that is a combination of turmeric and black peppercorn daily.
Studies done in China have shown that turmeric has an anticoagulant property that can help lower cholesterol and help prevent blood clots that could cause strokes.
In many cultures turmeric is widely regarded as an immune enhancing herb and has been used for centuries for this purpose. This herb has been commonly utilized for 100’s of years for many ailments and the western world is finally catching on to its amazing properties.
HOW DO I USE THIS PLANT MEDICINE REGULARLY?
Incorporating turmeric into your daily diet is extremely easy even if you’ve never used it regularly before. One of the simplest ways is to drink turmeric tea. You can buy organic tea bags and brew yourself an afternoon cup each day and note how you feel. I enjoy turmeric tea but have realized I don’t follow through with that as often in the hot summer months. In the winter it is very easy to bring that habit back.
In the summer I am much more consistent, taking a dropperful of an organic turmeric and black peppercorn tincture each morning and evening. It’s super simple and easy to create a habit! I take this tincture twice a day to support my liver in its daily detox processes as well as for health attributes.
Buying fresh, organic turmeric and adding it to your daily green juice is another excellent way to incorporate it as well as the most effective way to get all the healing benefits of this amazing plant. Nothing supports the body more than fresh pressed juice and all the vitamins, minerals, and healing properties these beautiful plants provide deposited directly into the blood stream, no digestion needed.
Adding turmeric to your daily dishes is another easy way to benefit from this plant. Experiment with Indian dishes or just start adding it to your current favorite foods ½ tsp at a time and see what you think. The color itself might seem intimidating, but turmeric is very easily incorporated and not a difficult taste to acclimate to.
Finally, if you have never heard of Golden Milk, you are missing out. Turmeric makes a lovely drink using plant milk, pick your favorite, ours is almond and coconut milk, sweetener of your choice, we like honey, agave, or maple syrup, you can add a little coconut oil for richness if you prefer and other awesome add ins are ginger and cinnamon. I have found that the key to drinks like these is to experiment. Try out different milk, sweetener and add in options and decide for yourself what recipe you enjoy. I love to make this amazing immune boosting, anti-inflammatory drink after a full day of action taking on my dreams. It feels like a warm well-deserved hug. Learning to love myself with amazing food choices has been such a wonderful gift from Mother Nature herself.
